Aim

To train the next generation of leaders in vaccinology on the African continent.

Who should apply?

The Wits-ALIVE MSc(Med) in the field of vaccinology will appeal to medical, health science and public health professionals who have a desire to contribute to reducing mortality and improving health through vaccination, especially in low & middle income countries.

The African Advanced Vaccinology course (Afro-ADVAC) is a 10-day long course in advanced vaccinology, aimed at decision-makers in the field of vaccinology. This biennial course is hosted near Johannesburg, South Africa by ALIVE (African Leadership in Vaccinology Expertise), University of the Witwatersrand.

Afro-ADVAC 2023 was held from 17th – 26th April 2023.

The development of new vaccines and strengthening of immunization programs rank high among global and African public health priorities.

The development of new vaccines and strengthening of immunization programs rank high among global and African public health priorities. Progress in these areas would contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals, promote global health security and impact on antimicrobial resistance. Nevertheless, there is limited capacity in Africa to conduct research in vaccinology, take informed policy decisions and improve program implementation.

Vaccinology Training

Wits-Alive offers several training programs in the field of vaccinology. 

The “MSc(Med) in vaccinology” is a full-time, in-person, 2-year long masters program at Wits university. 

The Afro-ADVAC course is an short course in advanced vaccinology offered biennially. 

Wits-Alive is a member of the International Collaboration on Advanced Vaccinology Training (ICAVT icavt.org)
